Seersucker is back this summer. The embossed effect of this fabric consisting of 99% cotton and 1% elastane owes itself to the alternation of highly taut threads in one direction and looser threads in the other. This technique makes it easier for air to pass through and prevents the fabric from sticking unpleasantly to the skin, at the same time making it ideal for wearing on warm days. Originating from India, seersucker was first imported into Europe around 1750 and later became fashionable during the reign of Louis XV. When it reached the USA, it was mainly used to make coveralls for labourers, subsequently becoming more gentrified and fashionable with upper class folk of New York.
